You may have a fast German internet plan yet still face weak Wi-Fi in the bedroom, unreliable video calls or slow downloads. The problem is not necessarily your provider: your internet line brings data to the router, while the router creates the wireless network inside your home. To get better Wi-Fi in Germany, first identify which side is causing the problem. Then you can adjust the router, add mesh equipment or address the underlying connection.

To TelekomYour fixed internet line connects your home to the provider. It may use DSL, cable, fibre or another access technology. Your router then distributes that connection by Wi-Fi and, where used, Ethernet cables.
This distinction matters when diagnosing German Wi-Fi. If an Ethernet-connected computer performs well but wireless devices do not, the local Wi-Fi network is probably the limiting factor. If both connections are slow, investigate the line, provider equipment or a possible internet outage. Advertised plan speeds describe the internet connection, not the speed guaranteed to every wireless device in every room.
Begin with simple changes before buying new equipment. Move the router into an open, central position rather than leaving it inside a cupboard, behind a television or at one end of the property. Thick walls, floors, metal objects and nearby electronics can weaken or obstruct the signal.
Restart the router if performance has suddenly deteriorated, and install router updates provided by its manufacturer or internet provider. Test several rooms with the same device so that you can identify a coverage problem rather than differences between phones or laptops.
For a persistent dead zone, consider a mesh system or a properly positioned access point. A repeater can help in some homes, but placing it where the original signal is already poor limits what it can relay.

A central position is useful, but your daily needs should decide the exact location. Prioritise reliable coverage around workspaces, televisions and frequently used rooms. Keep the router elevated and exposed rather than on the floor.
The 2.4 GHz band generally reaches through a home more readily, while 5 GHz is often preferable near the router. Many routers select a band automatically. If yours separates them into different network names, test both in the room where performance matters.
Mesh units create coordinated wireless coverage across several points. Place each unit where it can still receive a good connection from another unit. If possible, connecting mesh points by Ethernet can reduce the wireless link between them as a bottleneck.
To separate a line problem from a Wi-Fi problem, connect a computer directly to the router with a LAN cable. Pause large downloads, cloud backups and streaming on other devices, then run repeated tests under comparable conditions.
The Bundesnetzagentur broadband measurement service provides a free desktop application that measures a fixed connection independently of provider and technology. It allows you to compare measured transfer rates with those agreed in your contract. Its formal fixed-line measurement uses a direct LAN connection because Wi-Fi conditions can reduce the result.
Keep records if the wired result repeatedly falls short, and follow the provider’s troubleshooting process.
If you are looking for free internet in Germany while travelling, you may find public hotspots at stations, on trains, in accommodation, cafés or municipal locations. Access and conditions vary, so check the venue rather than assuming that a public network will be available.
Deutsche Bahn says WIFI@DB is offered at many stations; you can verify availability on the relevant station detail page. Users select WIFI@DB and accept the terms and privacy notice, with registration not normally required. WIFIonICE is available across the ICE fleet and on parts of other train fleets.
For local planning, the Berlin and Potsdam public Wi-Fi map shows participating public and private hotspots. It is a local resource, not evidence of nationwide coverage. See our Berlin internet guide for home-connection information in the city.
Start with an address check because technology and plan availability always depend on the exact property. Compare the connection type, download and upload rates, contract term, data allowance, activation charge and the price after any introductory period through our German home internet comparison.
Plan speeds vary substantially even within one technology. For example, congstar Home 100 Flex is an unlimited flexible DSL plan advertised at 100/40 Mbit/s for €36 per month with no activation fee. O2 Home M Fibre is advertised at 150/75 Mbit/s for €24.99 per month, rising to €39.99 from month 13, with a €9.99 activation fee and a 24-month term. These line rates do not guarantee equivalent Wi-Fi performance around your home.
Check whether the router is rented, purchased or supplied separately, which Wi-Fi standards and mesh options it supports, and what happens when the contract ends. A faster plan cannot compensate for poor router placement, while premium wireless equipment cannot make an underperforming line faster. If fixed access is unsuitable, compare 5G home internet, noting that mobile reception and data limits may affect its suitability.
Confirm the live offer at your address.
Home Wi-Fi is available wherever you can install a compatible internet connection and router, but the underlying fixed or mobile service depends on your exact address. Public Wi-Fi is offered in various stations, trains, cafés, hotels and municipal locations, but availability is not uniform. Check the venue, station page or relevant local hotspot map before relying on it.
Your plan’s advertised rate applies to the internet line, while wireless performance also depends on router placement, walls, interference, the Wi-Fi band and your device. Test a computer through a direct LAN connection. If wired performance is good, improve the wireless network. If wired tests are also poor, investigate the line or contact your provider.
Connect a computer directly to the router with an Ethernet cable, stop other high-traffic activity and run several tests under similar conditions. The Bundesnetzagentur desktop application can compare measured transfer rates with the rates agreed in your contract. A Wi-Fi-only result is useful for checking room coverage, but it does not isolate the fixed line from wireless interference.
Some public venues and transport locations offer Wi-Fi without a separate access charge. Deutsche Bahn offers WIFI@DB at many stations and WIFIonICE across the ICE fleet, with availability varying outside that fleet. Other hotspots are operated locally or privately. Check the access terms and do not treat a Berlin or Potsdam hotspot map as a nationwide coverage map.
Compare the full rental or purchase cost, supported Wi-Fi features, mesh compatibility, update arrangements and the provider’s support conditions. Also confirm that your chosen router works with the connection technology and can be configured correctly. A provider router may simplify setup, while another compatible model may offer better coverage or controls. Verify all equipment terms before ordering.
