If you are choosing home internet in Germany, the speed number on a plan is only the starting point. You need enough download capacity for everyone using the connection, sufficient upload speed for calls and cloud work, and a technology available at your exact address. Advertised residential plans reviewed by InternetGermany.de range from basic DSL to fibre and cable products advertising 1,000 Mbps downloads. Your real result will depend on the connection, router, home network and local availability.

To TelekomAn advertised speed describes the plan rather than a guaranteed result from every device. Performance can be affected by line conditions, network demand, your router, Wi-Fi interference and the distance between your device and router.
Among plans that state both figures, we found advertised speeds from 16 Mbps download and 2.4 Mbps upload on entry-level DSL to 1,000 Mbps download and 500 Mbps upload on selected fibre plans. These are product figures, not measurements of average internet speed in Germany.
We do not publish a national average, a provider ranking or a single figure for the fastest internet in Germany. Such labels can hide the address-level differences that determine which connection you can actually order.
Choose according to simultaneous use, not simply the highest number. A person browsing, sending email and watching occasional video has different needs from a shared flat where several people stream, make video calls and download games at once.
Residential choices include 16 and 50 Mbps DSL plans, 100 and 250 Mbps DSL tiers, and faster cable or fibre products. A lower tier may suit light use, while a busy household benefits from more capacity when activities overlap. Faster service will not fix weak Wi-Fi, however, so consider your router position and home layout too.
If you work from home, create large backups or regularly send media files, compare upload speed as carefully as download speed.

Download speed affects receiving data: streaming, loading websites, installing software and downloading files. Upload speed affects sending data, including video calls, cloud backups and file transfers.
The difference between technologies can be substantial. A 1,000 Mbps cable plan from Vodafone advertises 75 Mbps upload, while selected 1,000 Mbps fibre plans from Telekom, O2 and Deutsche Glasfaser advertise 500 Mbps upload. Check both numbers before ordering. If a provider does not state an upload figure, ask it to confirm the contractual rate.
Fibre internet in Germany offers the strongest advertised upload figures among the plans we reviewed. Available tiers include 150/75, 300/150, 600/300 and 1,000/500 Mbps, although the provider and exact products vary by address.
DSL remains a practical fixed-line choice where faster connections are not offered. Reviewed plans advertise downloads from 16 to 250 Mbps. Uploads stated for these plans reach 40 Mbps.
Cable internet plans advertise downloads from 50 to 1,000 Mbps. The reviewed cable products reach 75 Mbps upload, so cable and fibre plans with the same download headline may differ considerably when sending files.
The 5G home internet product we compare is congstar Homespot & Go, advertising 50/25 Mbps with a data allowance. Mobile performance can vary with signal and network conditions.
Confirm the live offer at your address.
We do not publish a national average internet speed Germany figure. An average can combine different technologies, locations, plans and testing methods without showing what is available in your building. For a practical decision, check the fixed-line technologies offered at your exact address and compare each plan's advertised download and upload rates. Test an existing connection directly by LAN for a clearer result.
There is no single provider or plan we label as the fastest internet in Germany. The reviewed residential offers include cable and fibre plans advertising downloads of up to 1,000 Mbps. Selected fibre plans advertise 500 Mbps upload, while reviewed 1,000 Mbps cable plans advertise 75 Mbps upload. Actual availability and performance depend on your address, connection and home network.
A 50 Mbps plan can be a sensible option for lighter household use, but suitability depends on how many people and devices are active simultaneously. Streaming, video calls, downloads and cloud backups can overlap in a shared home. Check the upload rate too: reviewed 50 Mbps plans include advertised uploads of 20 or 25 Mbps, depending on the provider and technology.
Your result may be affected by Wi-Fi interference, router placement, other active devices, line conditions or network demand. Test again using a computer connected directly to the router by LAN, with downloads and streaming paused. If the wired result remains below the contractual rates, use the official Breitbandmessung process and retain its protocol when contacting your provider.
Choose from the technologies actually offered at your address. Fibre plans in our research have the strongest advertised upload figures, while cable can provide high download speeds. DSL offers lower tiers and may be available where other fixed-line options are not. A 5G home product can be useful where suitable, but performance depends on mobile signal and the plan may include a data allowance.
