How we earn money

InternetGermany.de is a comparison and information site. It is not an internet provider and it does not sell a connection.

Some providers may pay a commission if you continue to their site through an affiliate link. That commission is paid by the provider. It does not change the published prices, contract length or advertised speed, and it does not change the price sort.

Affiliate links are stored separately from the price feed. If a plan has no tracking URL, the button opens the provider’s official page.

congstar Home and Homespot buttons use Awin tracking URLs for the matching tariff. Phone, prepaid and mobile-plan rows from that feed are not used. Other providers still open their official pages until a tracking URL is on file.

How to get internet in Germany

If you have a new home but no internet connection in Germany, the key is to check the exact address before comparing plans. Enter the postcode, street and house number in a provider’s availability checker, compare the connections and prices offered there, and review the contract summary before ordering. Installation may involve activating an existing line, connecting a router or arranging access for a technician. This guide takes you through each decision in order.

Check your address before choosing a provider

Your street or city alone is not enough to establish availability. The connection offered can differ between neighbouring buildings, so always check the complete address before settling on a provider, technology or advertised speed.

Treat broad comparisons as a way to create a shortlist. Use our German home internet comparison to understand the available plan structures, then confirm each candidate at your address. The result should identify the connection type and speed that the provider expects to supply.

Check the details again during checkout. A provider may advertise several technologies nationally while offering only one of them at your building. If the order displays a different speed or connection from the plan you selected, pause and review the new terms before proceeding.

Start with the address check

When working out how to set up internet in Germany, follow a simple sequence:

  1. Enter the full installation address in the provider’s checker.
  2. Record the available technology, download speed and upload speed.
  3. Compare the monthly prices, setup charge, router cost and contract term.
  4. Open the selected offer again and verify that it still matches the checked address.
  5. Read the contract summary before placing the order.

Keep screenshots or copies of the offer and order confirmation for reference. Pay particular attention to the spelling of the installation address, flat or unit information requested by the provider, and any appointment instructions. Incorrect or incomplete address details can make it harder to identify the correct line or building connection.

Illustration of setting up home internet after moving to Germany

Choose the right connection type

Compare the technology as well as the speed

DSL runs over the telephone line, while cable internet uses the building’s cable network. Fibre internet can provide stronger upload speeds, but it must reach your exact address. For example, the reviewed O2 Home L plans advertise 300/150 Mbit/s on fibre and 300/75 Mbit/s on cable.

Do not select a plan from download speed alone. Upload speed matters for cloud backups, sending large files and video calls. Also check whether the plan has unlimited data, whether a landline is included and what router is required.

Consider wireless access separately

5G home internet can be an alternative where a suitable fixed line is not available. The 5G home product we compare is congstar Homespot & Go, which has defined data allowances rather than unlimited data. Check mobile reception, the permitted usage location and the allowance before ordering.

Read intro price, later price and setup together

A low opening price does not describe the full cost. Read three figures together: the introductory monthly price, the later monthly price and the one-off activation or setup charge. Add any router charge displayed by the provider.

Compare the cost across the full minimum term

The reviewed Vodafone GigaZuhause 300 Cable offer, for example, starts at €19.99 per month, changes to €49.99 from month 10 and has a €49.99 activation charge. O2 Home M DSL starts at €24.99, changes to €39.99 from month 13 and has a €9.99 activation charge. These examples show why the first monthly payment is not a reliable comparison by itself.

For each option, multiply every monthly price by the number of months for which it applies, then add one-off charges and router costs. Check whether extras are optional before including them.

Check the contract summary and term

The provider must give you a clear contract summary before the contract is concluded. According to the Bundesnetzagentur’s customer-rights guidance, this summary helps you check the term, data rates and notice conditions before ordering.

Compare the summary with the offer you chose. Confirm the connection type, download and upload rates, minimum term, monthly prices, price-change month, setup cost and notice conditions. If a detail such as the activation charge or router price is not clearly stated, check it with the provider before accepting the contract.

A flexible plan can reduce your commitment, but it may have a different setup charge. The reviewed plans include flexible, 12-month and 24-month terms, so do not assume similarly named products have the same conditions.

Order, installation and router setup

Place the order only after the address result and contract summary agree. Save the confirmation and note the planned activation steps. Check whether the provider requires a technician visit, remote activation or access to a connection point in the building. If an appointment is required, make sure someone can provide access to the relevant rooms or shared areas.

Connect the router after activation

Follow the provider’s instructions for the correct wall socket and router port. Connect the router to power, wait for its status lights to settle, and then join the Wi-Fi network using the supplied credentials. Change the network name or password if needed and place the router in an open, central position rather than inside a cupboard.

Test through both Wi-Fi and a wired connection where possible. If the line works by cable but Wi-Fi is weak, the issue may be the home network rather than the internet line. Our Wi-Fi guide explains how placement and local interference affect the connection.

Moving an existing internet contract

Tell your current provider about the move early and give the complete new address. Ask whether the same service can be supplied there, whether the connection type or speed will change, and what installation arrangements apply. Do not order a replacement contract until you understand how the existing agreement will be handled.

Contract length and notice periods appear in your contract documents and bills. The Bundesnetzagentur’s guidance on switching and moving states that a statutory special termination right applies if the agreed service cannot be supplied at the new address.

Keep written confirmation of the move request, the address-check result and any agreed activation or termination date. If you are also changing provider, coordinate the dates carefully to reduce the risk of paying for overlapping services or losing access earlier than expected.

How to get internet: short answers

Confirm the live offer at your address.

How long does it take to get internet connected in Germany?

There is no single installation time for every address. It depends on the connection already present, whether remote activation is possible and whether a technician must visit. Check the provider’s proposed activation date before ordering and follow any appointment instructions. If you need immediate access, consider a temporary mobile internet option separately.

Can I order internet before moving into my new home?

You can check plans for the new address, but confirm the provider’s ordering and access requirements before proceeding. Use the exact installation address and make sure you can receive relevant messages and provide building access if requested. Coordinate the activation date with your move rather than assuming the connection will work automatically when you arrive.

Which internet connection should I choose in Germany?

Start with the technologies available at your exact address, then compare download and upload rates, full-term cost, data allowance and contract length. Fibre may offer higher upload rates, while DSL or cable may be the practical fixed-line option in your building. Choose for your household’s actual use rather than simply taking the highest advertised download speed.

Do I need to get a router separately?

Check the order details to see whether a router is included, rented, sold separately or optional. If you want to use your own equipment, ask the provider which technical specifications and connection details it must support. Do not compare plans without adding any router cost you expect to pay, particularly when one offer includes equipment and another does not.

Can I get internet in Germany without a long contract?

Yes, some reviewed plans have flexible terms, while others run for 12 or 24 months. Flexible plans can have different activation charges, so compare the whole offer rather than the term alone. See our guide to internet without a long contract in Germany, then verify availability and current conditions at your address.
