How we earn money

InternetGermany.de is a comparison and information site. It is not an internet provider and it does not sell a connection.

Some providers may pay a commission if you continue to their site through an affiliate link. That commission is paid by the provider. It does not change the published prices, contract length or advertised speed, and it does not change the price sort.

Affiliate links are stored separately from the price feed. If a plan has no tracking URL, the button opens the provider’s official page.

congstar Home and Homespot buttons use Awin tracking URLs for the matching tariff. Phone, prepaid and mobile-plan rows from that feed are not used. Other providers still open their official pages until a tracking URL is on file.

Internet and TV in Germany

If you are setting up a German home and want television without choosing the wrong connection or contract, start with the internet available at your exact address. IPTV and standalone streaming work over an internet connection, while cable TV requires a suitable cable connection in the building. Internet bundles can simplify billing, but separate contracts may offer more flexibility. Compare the complete contract cost, channel selection, equipment and cancellation terms before ordering.

Choose between IPTV, cable TV and streaming

Your best option depends on how you watch television, which connection reaches the property and whether you want one provider or separate services.

IPTV

IPTV delivers live television and related features through your internet connection. It commonly uses a provider app or set-top box. It suits viewers who want conventional channels alongside programme guides, replay functions or streaming integration, although the exact features vary by package.

Cable TV

Cable television uses the building’s coaxial cable connection. It can be combined with cable internet in Germany, but you must check the socket, building connection and provider availability at your address.

Standalone streaming

Standalone services run through a compatible smart TV, streaming device or app. They let you choose your internet provider separately and can be easier to change, but each service has its own subscription, content and device rules.

Start with the internet connection

Check the address before comparing television packages. The residential plans we reviewed span DSL, cable, fibre and 5G home internet, but availability always depends on the exact property.

For IPTV or streaming, prioritise a stable connection that can support everyone using the home network at the same time. Consider televisions, video calls, gaming, downloads and other connected devices rather than judging a plan by its headline download speed alone.

Check whether installation is needed, which socket will be used and when service can begin. If you have not ordered German broadband before, follow the practical steps in our guide to getting internet in Germany, then use our German home internet comparison to assess the available connection types.

Illustration of home internet used for streaming television

MagentaTV and GigaTV

Telekom positions MagentaTV as a combination of live television and streaming features. It can also be purchased independently of a Telekom internet line, so you can consider it even when another company supplies your broadband. Packages and included streaming services vary; consult the official MagentaTV information for the current options.

Vodafone offers GigaTV with cable internet and internet-based GigaTV options for DSL or fibre connections. The applicable product depends on your connection and address. Vodafone advises customers to verify availability, equipment, channel packages and prices through its official internet and TV information.

Do not assume that similarly named packages include the same channels, hardware or streaming subscriptions. Compare the order summary for your address.

Check channels, equipment and streaming services

Begin with the programmes you actually watch. Check the current channel list, channel languages and whether the channels you need are part of the basic package or require an add-on. If sport, films or international programming matter to you, verify the specific service rather than relying on a general entertainment description.

Next, establish how you will watch. Ask whether the service requires a provider box, works directly through your television, or supports the streaming devices you already own. Confirm any equipment charge, delivery cost, rental condition and return requirement.

Features such as recording, replay, simultaneous viewing and use outside the home can differ by package. Included streaming subscriptions may also have separate activation steps, account requirements and renewal conditions.

Speed and data for television streaming

There is no single suitable speed for every household. A home with one television has different demands from a household streaming on several screens while someone works or plays online. Use our internet speed guide to assess your combined usage.

The fixed-line plans we reviewed use unlimited data, which avoids a monthly allowance being consumed by regular television viewing. Mobile home internet needs closer attention. For example, congstar Homespot & Go plans have allowances of 100 GB, 200 GB or 400 GB rather than unlimited data. Frequent streaming can use those allowances, so check your likely viewing pattern before relying on a mobile connection.

Wi-Fi quality also matters. Place the router sensibly and consider a wired connection for the television where practical. Our Wi-Fi guide explains how the home network can affect performance.

Compare bundle and separate-contract costs

Compare the total payable amount over the minimum term, not just the opening monthly price. Include broadband, the TV package, channel add-ons, streaming services, activation, delivery, router or television equipment and any price increase during the contract.

Promotional broadband prices illustrate why this matters. Vodafone’s GigaZuhause 300 Cable internet plan is advertised at €19.99 per month, changing to €49.99 from month 10, with a €49.99 activation charge. These amounts concern the internet plan and do not establish the cost of adding television.

A bundle can provide one account and a coordinated setup. Separate contracts let you change the television service without necessarily changing broadband. Compare both arrangements over the same period and note whether cancelling one component affects a discount on another.

Internet + TV: short answers

Confirm the live offer at your address.

Can I get German television without bundling it with internet?

Yes. Standalone streaming services can be used with a suitable internet connection from another provider. Telekom also states that MagentaTV can be purchased independently of a Telekom internet line. Check the service’s supported devices, channel package, minimum term and current price. Your broadband still needs to be stable enough for your household’s television and other simultaneous internet use.

Is IPTV the same as streaming television?

Both deliver video over an internet connection, but the buying experience can differ. IPTV commonly refers to a television package with live channels, a programme guide and provider equipment or an app. Standalone streaming services are subscribed to separately and may focus on live TV, films, series or particular content. Always compare the actual channels and features rather than the label.

Do I need a cable socket for GigaTV?

It depends on the GigaTV option. Vodafone offers GigaTV with cable internet as well as internet-based options for DSL or fibre. A cable-based service requires a suitable building connection, while an internet-based version uses the available broadband line. Complete Vodafone’s address check and confirm the required socket, hardware and installation arrangements before placing an order.

Is unlimited internet important for TV streaming?

Unlimited data is useful if you watch television regularly because streaming contributes to monthly data use. The fixed-line plans we reviewed have unlimited data, while the compared congstar Homespot & Go plans have defined allowances. If you choose mobile home internet, estimate use across every screen and device and check what happens when the allowance is consumed.

Is an internet and TV bundle better than separate contracts?

Neither arrangement is automatically better. A bundle may provide one bill and a coordinated installation, while separate contracts can make it easier to change television services without replacing broadband. Add every monthly and one-off charge over the minimum term. Then compare channel selection, equipment, price changes, notice periods and whether cancelling one service affects discounts on the other.
